Volunteers Play In The Mud at Tynehead Hatchery!

There’s not many times you will see full grown men and women (many of them seniors!) playing in the mud! With the Help from Our Community Partners our volunteers were turned into kids again this spring! All thanks to Major Project at Tynehead Hatchery that was Accomplished this spring.

Part of caring and raising salmon is ensuring a healthy habitat for them to live in. The Tynehead ponds had gathered a large amount of organic debris that was needed to be removed to allow a healthy, livable environment for our fish.

A big THANK YOU to the following in this two-week project that removed 190 cu loads of organic matter (far more than we had estimated)

Fin Tails

What is happening at the Hatchery you ask! Thousands of births! People checking the eggs, the fry, the water temperature, water flow and what seems like a thousand other checks, to ensure these fish have the very best chance of making it in the wild and return to us in years to come.

Tynehead Hatchery Field Trip Information & Reservation Form

Thank you for your interest in Field Trips at the Tynehead Hatchery. We run field trips for school classes and other interested groups in the fall and the spring of every year.

What is covered in our Field Trips?
We provide a 30 to 40 minutes of classroom time (depending on age group) where we review the salmon lifecycle, habitat and its relationship to salmon and other creatures living in the streams and oceans, and how we as humans can help the habitat and salmon. We then divide the class into three groups. Each group goes with their own volunteer and supervisor(s) to cover different stations within the hatchery building and its grounds; but in a different order. All groups get the same information and hands on time. Total time about 1.5 hours.

Cost is $100.00 for the Field Trip.

We can take a maximum of 30 students per class with at least one supervisor being present for every 10 students. Please complete the following Field Trip Reservation Form. Once submitted, you and the school/organization will be sent a copy. This is not a confirmation! Our Field Trip Coordinator will confirm the time and date with our volunteers, and get back to you.

Field Trip Choices
All Field Trip cover the same material in the class portion.

  1. Fall Field Trip: These Field Trips occur from Mid October until the end of November on Wednesdays with a choice of a 0915 or 1100 hour time slot. Adjustments can be made for some groups.
These classes have a high chance of seeing the salmon “run”. For the lucky ones, we may be doing an egg take on the class day.
  2. Spring Field Trip: These Field Trips occur in April and May on Wednesdays and most Thursdays with a choice of a 0915 or 1100 hour time slot. Adjustments can be made for some groups. All participants in these field trips will help release our Chinook or Coho Salmon fry into the Serpentine River.
  3. “Salmon in the Classroom Program” schools: These Field Trips are for the school involved in the DFO Salmon in the Classroom Program. These groups have priority booking for the month of May as their Coho babies need to be released back into the Serpentine River. These Field Trips occur in April and May on Wednesdays and most Thursdays with a choice of a 0915 or 1100 hour time slot. Adjustments can be made for some groups. All participants in these field trips will also release hatchery raised Chinook or Coho Salmon fry into the Serpentine River.
Important Information for Schools, Field Trip Supervisors and Parents
The Tynehead Hatchery is located within Metro Vancouver’s Tynehead Regional Park, a natural occurring environment with flowing water, rocks, trees and unpaved pathways. This natural setting may create potentially hazardous conditions that can lead to risk of injury. Potentially hazardous conditions include, but are not limited to, slipping on wet rocks or uneven ground, falling into the river, and being in contact with falling tree debris. We strive to keep these hazards to a minimum. We ask that all participants wear appropriate footwear for the terrain and that there be a minimum of one supervisor per 10 students. Participants who refuse to follow direction, continue with bad behavior or are putting the safety of others at a safety risk will be dismissed from the hatchery grounds.
